The history of Islam speaks of more than external disciplines, but deeper than that, there is a unique spiritual ideology\u2014Tasawwuf or Sufism. Many call it the \u2018heart of Islam\u2019, because it is the pure feeling of the human soul, which shows the way to deep love and spiritual connection with Allah. In today\u2019s analytical and reflective writing, we will understand the nature of Tasawwuf, the origin and significance of Sufism, and why it still awakens the souls of millions of people today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tasawwuf: Definition and Context
The word \u201cTasawwuf\u201d is originally Arabic. Its literal meaning is purification of the soul, abstinence, and closeness to God. This spiritual practice of Islam is mainly divided into three levels:
Islam \u2014 External behavior: prayer, fasting, hajj, etc.
Iman \u2014 Belief: Allah, angels, books, messengers, the Day of Judgment, etc.
Ihsan \u2014 Level of the heart: Worshipping Allah as if you see Him.
Sufism This third level is the practice of Ihsan. It is an attempt to enter the world of the soul, where inner purity, enlightenment of the heart, and a personal connection with Allah are the key, rather than external behavior.
Sufism: History and Origins
Sufism is the practical and organizational form of Sufism. It emerged as an important trend in Islamic history in the 8th century. However, its roots lie in the inspiration of the personal life of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
Sufism comes from four main sources:
A profound interpretation of the Quran
A spiritual interpretation of the Hadith
Akhlaq (character) of the Prophet
A lifestyle of the companions (especially the Ahlul Bayt)
Sufis believe that it is impossible to attain closeness to Allah without spiritual tazkiya (purification) and spiritual practice in addition to external Sharia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Main pillars of Sufism
Sufism is a structured spiritual path, which has specific levels, practices and philosophies. Some of its basic aspects are highlighted below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Muhasaba (self-assessment)
    A daily evaluation of one’s deeds, intentions and inner state.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Tawbah (repentance)
    Returning to Allah for sins and seeking forgiveness.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Dhikr (remembrance of Allah)
    An attempt to keep the heart in remembrance of Allah through various forms of dhikr (loud or silent).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Muraqaba (meditation)
    Immersing the soul in the existence of Allah\u2014\u201cYou look at Allah, and feel that He is looking at you.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Muhabbat (love)
    Love for all creation\u2014especially pure love for Allah and the Messenger.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. Fana and Baqa
    The name of dissolving one\u2019s own being is fana. And remaining in the existence of Allah\u2014baqa. Sufis attain this level of \u2018new spiritual birth after the death of the soul\u2019.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Importance and Contribution of Sufi Saints
    There are numerous Sufi saints in history who not only preached religion, but also changed the hearts of people. Notable among them are:
    Rabeeya Basri: A guide to the worship of love.
    Imam Ghazali: He took Sufism to an academic level.
    Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani: Founder of the Qaderiya Order.
    Bayezid Bastami: Symbol of spiritual transcendence.
    Meher Ali Shah and Shah Jalal: Spread the light of Sufism in the subcontinent.
    Maulana Rumi: Poet of love and love; his masnavi still stirs up emotions in all corners of the world.
    Every aspect of their lives\u2014restraint, sacrifice, and pursuit\u2014is a living example of Sufism.
    Sufi orders: Path and journey
    Sufism has various spiritual paths, called \u201ctariqas.\u201d These orders are mainly based on the teachings of the Prophet. Each order has a \u2018silsila\u2019 (continuous spiritual succession). Some notable orders are:
    Qaderiya
    Chishtia
    Naqshbandi
    Suhrawardiya
    Rifaiyya
    These orders have their own methods of practice, methods of remembrance, and the relationship between the murshid and the disciple. The main purpose of the Sufi order is to prepare the soul and gain closeness to Allah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Sufism and Love (Ishq)
    The heart of Sufism is \u2018Ishq\u2019\u2014blind, pure, selfless love for Allah. This love is such that it makes the lover forget his own existence. That is why many Sufis say:
    \u201cIshq is the only path\u2014the path that leads to God.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This love purifies the soul so much that the worldly attachment is broken and a person becomes spiritually liberated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Sufism and Sharia: Conflict or Harmony?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Many mistakenly believe that Sufism is opposed to Sharia. But true Sufi saints say:
    \u201cThe Sufism that is outside of Sharia is not true Sufism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Sufism is actually the inner world of Sharia. If Sharia is the body, then Sufism is its soul. Just as external rules and conduct are essential, so is internal spiritual development. It is only through the combination of the two that it is possible to become a complete Muslim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Relevance of Sufism in the Modern World
    In the present time, people are practicing religion mechanically. Prayers in the mosque, fasting, Hajj\u2014everything is happening, but the heart is drying up. Sufism is a new light at this time. It teaches people:
    How to worship with the heart.
    How to develop love for Allah.
    How to forgive others.
    How to recognize the soul.
    Sufism means the revolution of the soul. A meditation within oneself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Misinterpretation and challenges of Sufism
    Some misconceptions have spread in contemporary times, such as:
    Sufism is not just poetry or songs. It is the real path of soul purification.
    Many things in the shrine or dargah-centered culture are contrary to the core philosophy of Sufism.
    A true Sufi never hopes for show or fame.
    The need of the hour is to face these challenges and bring back Sufism to its original form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Conclusion: Returning to the Heart of Islam
