The followers of truth and love of Allah do not recognize the boundaries of race, religion, or color. Whoever they seek in the depths of their hearts, is for everyone. This truth has been clearly proven in the history of the Sufi sect of Islam. In today’s discussion, we will see how the Sufis have put the tolerance and compassion inherent in Islam into practice and where and how their common ground with spiritual saints of different religions like Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Guru Nanak has been manifested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Roots of Tolerance: Quran and Hadith
    In the Quran, the main book of Islam, Allah says: \u0644\u064e\u0643\u064f\u0645\u0652 \u062f\u0650\u064a\u0646\u064f\u0643\u064f\u0645\u0652 \u0648\u064e\u0644\u0650\u064a\u064e \u062f\u0650\u064a\u0646\u0650 \u2013 To you is your religion, and to Me is My religion. (Surah Kafirun, verse 6). This verse highlights one of the fundamental views of Islam\u2014tolerance. And the Prophet (peace be upon him) himself was Rahmatul-il-Alameen\u2014mercy for all creation. He was kind and just in his dealings with Jews, Christians, and even pagans. Despite being persecuted in Mecca, he went to Medina and tried to form a unified society, based on the Medina Charter, where the rights of people of all religions were ensured.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Sufism: A Heartfelt Commentary on Islam
    Sufism is strictly Islamic, but its expression is universal. The Sufis say that Allah is the true religion, love, and the rest are its external manifestations. For example, Hazrat Maulana Jalaluddin Rumi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Beyond right and wrong, there is a field. I will meet you there. That field is a place of love, mercy, and spiritual union. Sufis valued humanity as the true path to worship of God. That is why the Sufis’ Khanka was open to people of all religions, castes and tribes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu: The Path of Tears of Devotion
    Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was a vast ocean of Krishna love. But he was not limited to the confines of Hinduism. His teaching was that love is God and all beings are a part of Him.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    He used to say: He who loves beings, that person is God. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s devotional chanting style was much like Sufi Sama or meditative Qawwali. The two styles share a commonality of self-surrender through song, a sonorous way of experiencing God\/Allah, and a thirst for self-sacrifice and union through dance. Sylhet, Barisal, Nadia, Gaur\u2014these regions were frequent places where spiritual encounters between devotees of Chaitanya and Sufi saints took place. The exchange between Hazrat Shah Jalal and devotees of Chaitanya are seen in history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Guru Nanak: One God, One Humanity
      The beginning and end of the life of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, were both under the shadow of Sufism. He came in contact with Sufi saints of Lahore and Punjab, especially with saints like Hazrat Mian Mir. Guru Nanak’s main message was: Na koi Hindu, na koi Musalman. No one is Hindu, no one is Muslim, all are children of Allah. His message included a call for love for the ultimate truth, which is like the Ishq-e-Haqqi (true love) of the Sufis. He used to say that all humans are the sparks of one light. They differ only in their clothes. Nanak’s teachings were also harmonious and heart-based, like Chaitanya’s. He did not only follow rituals, but also gave importance to love and the development of the soul\u2014this is in line with the teachings of the Sufis.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. History of Sufi-Hindu-Sikh integration
      In the history of Bengal, especially in the 13th-17th centuries, a wonderful integration of these three streams is seen. The Sufi saints of Nadia and Sylhet, such as Shah Garibullah, Shah Kamal, Shah Jalal, kept their courts open to people of all religions. The Vaishnava saints of Bhatipara sang devotional songs together with the Sufi saints. Mian Mir laid the foundation of the holy Golden Temple of the Sikhs with his own hands, which is a historical example of supreme tolerance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. The union of Khanka and Akhra
      The Sufi Khankas of Bengal were much like the Vaishnava Akhras\u2014open, a balance of enjoyment and sacrifice, practice through singing, service to God through human service. That is why many say that the Sufi Khanka and the Vaishnava Akhra are two banks of the same spiritual river.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    4. Religious pluralism from the Sufi perspective
      For Sufis, religion is not the only path, but a multidimensional path to God. They say: As many religions, so many paths; but God is one. Hazrat Muhiuddin Ibn Arabi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: My heart has become a house, Christian monastery, Jewish synagogue, Hindu temple, Muslim mosque \u2013 all live there. Where I love, my heart is full.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    5. Why is this tolerance important in the consciousness of the era?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      When division is being spread in the name of religion today, the practices of Chaitanya, Nanak and Sufis teach us\u2014spiritual love is the real solution, humanity is the truth greater than religion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Diversity is the creation of God\u2014it is not an object of destruction, but of celebration. Sufism teaches us that tolerance does not mean just tolerance, but love of difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. Conclusion: Where is the meeting point?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        In the kirtan of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, in the words of Guru Nanak, in the love of Sufis\u2014a spiritual melody flows everywhere, who am I? For whom am I in this world? In answer to this question, they all say: I am for love\u2014love is my religion, my path, my God.
