Man’s spiritual journey is not limited to the limitations of body or mind. Every human being hides a deep desire within him—the search for truth, for love, for eternity. At the core of Sufism, this quest is called Fana and Baqa. Fana means the extinction of the soul—the end of one’s ego, desire, desire; And baqa means eternal status with Allah. Sufi journey is not complete without these two steps.

Fana: Annihilation of the soul
The word fana means “destruction” or “wiping out”. Sufis believe that as long as man has pride (nafs), greed and self-centeredness, he cannot see the beauty and love of God. So Fana means to completely dissolve oneself in the love of God.
Fana in the light of the Quran
Allah says: “Everything will perish except His face.” (Surah Qasas 28:88). This verse is the essence of Fona. Even if man loses everything, God is eternal.
Interpretation of the Sufis
- Bayazid Bastami (RA) said: “When I erased the ‘I’, I saw that there is nothing but Allah.”
- Mansur al-Hallaj’s famous saying “Ana al-Haq” (I am the truth) is actually a manifestation of Fana.
Baka: Eternal status
The next stage of Fana is Baka. When a saint ceases to exist, Allah gives him a new life—full of His remembrance, His love, His light. That’s Baka.
Baka in the light of hadith
The Prophet ﷺ said: “When My slave comes to Me through Nafal Ibadah, I love him. Then I become his hearing, sight, hands and feet.” (Bukhari). It is meant here that the servant loses his will and starts following the will of Allah. That’s the core of Baqa.
View of Sufi Saints
- Imam al-Ghazali (RA) said: “Fana is the death of pride, and Baqa’ is life with Allah.”
- Rumi (RA) wrote: “When you sink into the abyss, you will find that you are not lost—rather, God’s presence within you is permanent.”
Fana and Bakar Path
Tazqiya (self-purification) – giving up pride, desire, envy.
Mujahada (struggle) – Fighting against the self.
Zikr and Meditation – Purifying the heart by remembering the name of Allah.
Association of Murshids – Relation to a spiritual master.
Education of Fana-Baka in modern life
Today’s people are getting lost in consumerism, anxiety and competition. Fana teaches us—to humble ourselves, to break our pride, to put our trust in Allah. And Baca teaches—to implement this trust in every act of life.
For example –
Trusting God without fearing the problems of life.
Loving people, forgiving, working for the welfare of others.
Wealth, not fame; Rather give priority to spiritual peace.
Conclusion
Fana and Baka are not just religious theories, they are deep truths of the human soul. When a man dissolves his ego and surrenders to the love of God, he attains true liberation. Fana is extinction, and Baka is rebirth—where there is no screen between the servant and God.
In the language of the Sufis, Fana means I lost, Baka means Allah found.
