Tawajjuh in the Sufi Heart – Spiritual Connection

Labib Mahfuj Chisty

The heart is not just a blood-pumping organ—it is a spiritual center. Sufis believe that the light of Allah first descends into the heart of a servant. However, purifying that heart, guiding it to the right path, and filling it with the love of Allah is not an easy task. For this, a spiritual guide is needed. In Sufi terminology, this spiritual connection is called Tawajjuh.

Tawajjuh is the mysterious bridge through which a shaykh (murshid) flows light, power, and spiritual teachings into the hearts of his murid (disciple).

What is Tawajjuh?

The word Tawajjuh means vision, attention, or direction. In the Sufi context, it means—the spiritual attention of the shaykh, which brings about spiritual change in the hearts of the murid.

To put it simply, the heart of the Shaykh is like the sun, the heart of the disciple is like the moon, and Tawajjuh is the light that is reflected from the sun to the moon and dispels darkness.

Allah says:
“O you who believe! Fear Allah and keep company with the righteous.” (Surah At-Tawbah 9:119). Keeping company with the righteous does not mean just physical company, but also accepting their spiritual influence. This is the essence of Tawajjuh.

The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The company of the righteous is like that of a perfume seller. Even if you do not buy anything from him, his fragrance will touch you.” (Bukhari, Muslim). This is where it is understood that the light of the Shaykh’s heart enlightens the disciple, even if no direct teaching is given.

The Sufi Perspective

  1. Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “A single glance from the Shaykh can change the heart of the disciple in a way that is not possible with years of practice.”
  2. Rumi (RA) wrote: “Just as the eyes of a lover illuminate the beloved, so the Tawajjuh of a Shaykh illuminates the hearts of his disciples.”
  3. Ahmad Sirhindi (RA) said: “Tawajjuh is the key to opening the doors of Allah’s mercy.”

Stages of Tawajjuh

  1. Initiation: When the disciple first approaches the Shaykh, he purifies his heart through supplication and gaze.
  2. Continuous Tawajjuh: The disciple gradually makes spiritual progress through the Shaykh’s gaze, remembrance, and teachings.
  3. Total Alignment: At some point, the disciple’s heart becomes so connected to the Shaykh that his desires and aspirations are shaped by the guidance of the Shaykh.

Tawajjuh vs. Education
Many people think that spiritual knowledge can be gained only by reading books. But the Sufis say – books give knowledge, tawajjuh gives life. For example: a matchstick is needed to light a candle. A book is a candle, and tawajjuh is the matchstick that lights the light.

Application of tawajjuh in modern life
In today’s busy life, physical proximity to the Sheikh is not always available. But tawajjuh is not only face-to-face vision, but also a connection of the heart. When the disciple remembers the Sheikh from a distance, when he remembers his remembrance and advice, a kind of tawajjuh also occurs.

Practical benefits
Gaining mental peace, reducing negative thoughts, developing deep devotion to Allah, bringing discipline and positivity to life.

Conclusion
Tawajjuh is an invisible force that has illuminated the hearts of Sufis from generation to generation. The gaze of a Sheikh ignites a light in the hearts of disciples that is not possible to find through books.

In the Sufi view, tawajjuh means the electrical connection of the soul—the shaykh is its source, and the murid is the lamp that is illuminated by this light.
